HOW TO PREPARE A WALL FOR PAINTING

The first step towards a professional painting finishing is surface preparation,
How you prep your walls or any other type of surfaces determined your result you get at the end,
to many professionals painters surface preparation differentiate them from the amateurs, though
it's time consuming and take lots of eagle eyes sighting to get rid of the errors , defects and contours off the  wall or you have to do skimming all over just to be sure of the surface prep and it really worth the time.

There are different types of Surfaces check (types of surfaces) to understand more and they are also treated differently to attain a detailed finishing,
Let's dive in and gets it on...

WE HAVE 3 TYPES OF WALLS

1) Newly Plastered wall
2) Skimmed or Screeded  wall
3) Painted wall

NEWLY PLASTERED WALL

These types of walls are also called the Virgin walls, meaning that paint have never been applied on them before,
They are mostly sandy and have lots of tiny holes opening withing them.

PREP :-

1•Scraping down all sands, stones and unwanted particles off the wall is the first step,
best achieve with the aid of 6inch,9inch scraper or a spatula.(types of spatula and usage)

2•Priming the wall is next with a primer paint or rather the first coat of the quality of paint you will be applying for the finishing with a paint roller.
Note' this will help in sealing off most of the tiny holes that eyes can't pick @first glance and makes most necessary cracks visual which helps towards the next step.

3•Putty/crack filling, this is a very important part of the surface preparation procedure, mixing and applying the ready to use putty or mixing the powder putty into paste also differs (cualks and putty),  for best application and results use a rubber or plastic filling pads to fill in the putty compare to the random steel scrapper for filling , this makes the putty/crack filler to patch in easily and give a smooth edge over cuntours,

Note :- do not skip or ignore any part that is necessary for patches or fill ups as it will become error at the end.

4•Sanding the patches is next with a smooth sandpaper no(), slightly done after the putty is fully dried , focus on the edges for leveling then dust off all particles from the wall,

Note :- don't forget to put on a nose guard to prevent you from inhaling the dust particles.

5•Patches touch ups with the primer or quality of paint for the finishing to makes the putty level up with the previous primed wall,

note :- not all the surface needs the touch up, just the patches.

6Painting the first coats is next or second layer of coat of the quality of paint for the finishing , this depends on what layer and type of paint (types of paint) you are applying for your finishings

SKIMMED OR SCREEDED WALL

These are walls that have been plastered with skimming or screeding material to give a very smooth and leveled surface, check (how to screed a wall) for better understanding,
These are the perfect walls for best results towards detailed finishing.

PREP:-

1•Sanding , put on your nose guard, cover your hair because sanding is the first step on skimmed or screeded surfaces,
using a smooth sandpaper no(), or an electric shavers to soften the surface and be sure to work with your scraper at the same time because they come in handy,
what you should watch out for on this surfaces are mostly peel off, bumps and cracks
when u suddenly run into such defect don't hesitate to bring it down because it's already weak and separated from the wall ,so scrape it and fill it back with putty ,

Note :- leaving or ignoring defects will only cause more damages soon after applying your paint.

2Dusting off all particles from the wall with the aid of a traditional broom , rag , electric blower or vacuum , you DNT want to leave any particle on the walls as it will affect your work flow when painting.

3Priming the surface is next or rather applying your first coat of the quality of paint you will be applying for the finishing with a paint roller.(paint and surfaces)

Note :- priming also help to identify more seperated or weak screeded surface that needs to be scrapped off once it's wet and also makes necessary cracks noticeable.

4•Putty/crack filling, comes in on the prep procedure, mixing and applying the ready mix putty differs , use a screeding material as fillers for large peel off surfaces  with a spatula (cualks and putty),
for best results use a rubber or plastic scraper(filling pads) to fill in putty on cracks on small surfaces , this makes the putty to patch in easily and smooth,
do not skip or ignore any part that is necessary.

5•Sanding the patches especially the edges to avoid gallops with a smooth sandpaper no(),
slightly done after the putty is fully dried then dust off,

6•Touch up the patches with the primer paint or quality of paint for the finishing,
this makes the putty to level with the previous primed wall,
Note: not all the surface needs the touch up, just the patches.

7Surface ready for the second coat(primer) or first layer of coats(quality of paint for the finishing), this depends on what layer and type of paint (types of paint) you are applying for your finishings

PAINTED WALL

This are the once upone atime painted walls,
i.e  previous painted walls that needs new looks, renovated or repair walls that needs a whole fresh come alive, whichever wall that has paint on it in the past but needs a new look has to go through its prep
procedure,

PREP:-

1•Scrapping the wall is the first step towards achieving this, what you should pay attention to most are weak paints that needs to be scrapped down,

2•Priming the wall is next with your primer paint or the quality of paint that you are applying for the finishing
Note :- priming the walls always fill in some tiny holes , makes most cracks and necessary contours noticeable , also allow seperated paint that still form a fake look to be swollen when wet and are easily identify as defects that needs to be scrapped and refill.

3•Get hold of your scrapper, filling pads and spatulas, it's time to start filling those opening, cracks, peel off and contours on the walls with your putty/caulk (putty and plaster)
Note:- large peel off are advice to be worked on with a spatula (types of spatula and usage) for easy application's.

4Lets start sanding off the patches when they are fully dried with a smooth sandpaper No(),
Note: that the edges of the patches are the most important parts to concentrate on when sanding off , this helps in leveling the surface and reduces gallops on the wall.

5•Touch up the patches with the primer paint or quality of paint for the finishing,
Note: not all the surface that needs to be touched , just the patches.

6Surface ready for the first layer of coats(quality of paint for the finishing), this depends on what layer and type of paint (types of paint) you are applying for your finishings, 2 Coats is the random coat for most painter but additional coats can be added in cases of low coverage in some paint products or color quality.
